We are calling on all ESC Local 20 members at Kaiser to join our union siblings at SEIU-UHW and OPEIU Local 29 in authorizing a 24-hour sympathy strike starting November 18th at 7 a.m. in support of Stationary Engineers, Local 39, who have been on strike since September 18th. Electronic ballots go out November 8th — don’t wait, vote as soon as you get your ballot!

Did you know a strong union contract isn’t just about wages and health care? CKPU and ESC are proud to have also won important educational benefits, which you can take part in this month! Join Workforce Development Week October 19th-21st for a series of webinars and trainings devoted to building your skills and knowledge as we prepare for the future of health care work.

On the eve of arbitration, Kaiser agreed to settle with the Union, acknowledging that the 2019 Agreement language on evening and night shift differential applies to CLSs and MLTs. The change in differentials should have commenced on April 11, 2021. Please check your paychecks and notify your union representative if the appropriate, higher differential does not appear.

For five months, Home Health Therapists have been working in partnership with Kaiser to develop a Predictive Guidelines Training. We are pleased to announce the completion of the training video and guide which is intended to reduce work assignments that push many home health therapists beyond an 8-hour workday. The training should be reviewed by labor-management teams in local offices and used as an opening to discuss how much time visits and other tasks take.

Over the next month, our Coalition Sisters and Brothers will be picketing Kaiser to demand that Kaiser stays true to our agreement and pays the full Hero Bonus. Please join them if you can, wear ESC blue and yellow, and let Kaiser know: Healthcare workers deserve the full Hero Bonus, period!

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic turned our worlds upside down, and the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions pushed Kaiser to recognize the sacrifices of our unions’ healthcare workers with a Hero Bonus. Now, Kaiser is trying to short-change thousands of our coalition sisters and brothers, including ESC members, and penalize them for not meeting PSP goals they could not meet during a pandemic — take action today and tell Kaiser CEO Greg Adams that we will not stand for this!

ESC Local 20 pledges our commitment to the Black Lives Matters movement. We stand with those in the labor movement who will fight for equality for our Black brothers and sisters. We stand against the use of qualified immunity and union contracts to shield police from the consequences of oppressive violence. Unions have an important role to play in the constant struggle for justice, and we will not allow them to be co-opted to uphold systemic racism.
